What kind of cases? Our focus is mostly family law -- divorces (with and without children), paternity/parentage cases, child support issues, parenting plans and related issues. We also offer limited forms and help with landlord tenant disputes, guardian and conservator reports, criminal expungements, name changes and adoptions.
What kind of help is available? We have computers to draft your forms on. We have software to help you calculate child support. Most important, we have detailed instructions on how to do these things, and clerks to help you navigate the forms and get them filed. Finally, we have some volunteer attorneys, with limited availability, by appointment only. Call for an application to be emailed to you.
Tips on Using the Help Center Most of our instructions and form pleadings are available online and should be reviewed before your visit to the Help Center. The best way is to carefully read the instructions for what you want to do, fill out forms as best you can and bring your hard copies with you. We cannot print documents from your personal email, computer or thumb drive. If you can’t complete the forms at home, or you need more help, you may use our computers to prepare and print your documents.
The Help Center staff are Court Clerks who cannot give legal advice. They can answer questions about the instructions, point out the essential statutes and guide you through the forms. There is no legal confidentiality privilege between you and the Help Center staff but they will not discuss your case with others. The staff will remain neutral but may provide services to other people involved in your legal situation.
Visits often take longer than you expect. Many people find that it can take over an hour to complete needed forms. You may not be able to do everything necessary in one visit. If you must bring young children to the Help Center, please bring another person to supervise them. You, and others, will need to be able to focus on your legal tasks without distraction.
Bring your checkbook or cash. While most things at the Help Center are free, some things have a fee. Example: filing fees, service fees, subpoenas.
If English is not your first language, there are phone translation services available through Cyracom. Please visit http://interpret.cyracom.com/languagelist/ to see if they offer the language you need.
